What is CBCT ?

Cone Beam Computed Tomography ( CBCT )

Cone beam computed tomography is a special type of dental x ray.It is mostly asked to take when your normal dental x ray is not sufficient or in case of detailed diagnosis.

WHAT DIFFERS CBCT FROM OPG?

OPG ( orthopantomogram) is normal dental x ray ,where all dentist usually recommend is a Two dimensional x ray.It covers both your upper and lower jaw in two dimensional view.

CBCT is a three dimensional x ray. With the help of CBCT we can cover full upper and lower jaw, teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathway. Even Zygoma bone and Orbit can be examined in three dimensional view .

WHEN OPG & CBCT?

     OPG

 Diagnosis of decayed teeth
 Dental infection
 Fractures
 Impacted teeth
 Dislocation of jaw(maxilla or mandible)

   CBCT

 Pathological conditions
Assessment of sinus and floor of nasal cavity
Detection of jaw (maxilla or mandible) tumors
Cephalometric analysis (in case of orthodontic surgery)
Exact placement of dental implants
Digital dent
Bone analysis for zygomatic dental implants
Traumatic injury cases evaluation
Orthognathic surgeries

SAFETY PROTOCOLS FOR CBCT SCAN

There are certain protocol to be followed before you enter CBCT scan room.

All have to follow ALARA principle.Means As Low As Reasonably Achievable.Below we have explained clearly, how we follow ALARA principle.

WOMEN

We  ask the patient to remove their ear rings, nose piercings, clips on their hair. And have to put the chains back. These protocols are asked to follow ,because these items may interrupt the scan.Items will be given to respective person once scan is completed.

If the patient is pregnant ,they have to inform prior to the dentist ,before they advise CBCT scan.Because the radiations that eject from CBCT scan is not a good sign for both child and mother.

And even mobile phones are not allowed inside the scan room, due to some radiation effects.

MEN

Men wont have much conditions like women. They have to remove their chain or can put back. And mobile phones, gadgets are not allowed inside the CBCT scan room.

Childrens are not allowed inside CBCT scan room

Both men and women have to remove their specs if they are a regular user.

HOW CBCT X RAY IS DONE

The radiologist will assist you with the correct positioning for the CBCT scan.Make sure that you have not move or shake your head from the position.Even mild changes will make for repeat scan.

You can ask for particular region of interest to be scanned.CBCT scan contains different sizes ,that limits particular regions(Example only maxilla or only mandible)

Make sure that you are wearing a lead apron ,to avoid radiation exposure.

The machine will rotate around you about 30-40 seconds .You have to wait for your radiologist to come and release. You should not move ,even if machine  stops .

Sit back and relax, till your report reaches you.
